How to Calculate and Solve for Relative Permeability | Magnetic Properties

The relative permeability is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for the relative permeability, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Permeability (μ) and Permeability in Vacuum (μo).

The formula for calculating relative permeability:

μr = μ/μo

Where:

μr = Relative Permeability
μ = Permeability
μo = Permeability in Vacuum

Given an example;
Find the relative permeability when the permeability is 10 and the permeability in vacuum is 20.

This implies that;

μ = Permeability = 10
μo = Permeability in Vacuum = 20

μr = μ/μo
μr = 10/20
μr = 0.5

Therefore, the relative permeability is 0.5 H/m.

Calculating the Permeability when the Relative Permeability and the Permeability in Vacuum is Given.

μ = μr x μo

Where:

μ = Permeability
μr = Relative Permeability
μo = Permeability in Vacuum

Given an example;
Find the permeability when the relative permeability is 5 and the permeability in vacuum is 8.

This implies that;

μr = Relative Permeability = 5
μo = Permeability in Vacuum = 8

μ = μr x μo
μ = 5 x 8
μ = 40

Therefore, the permeability is 40.

Calculating the Permeability in Vacuum when the Relative Permeability and the Permeability is Given.

μo = μ / μr

Where:

μo = Permeability in Vacuum
μr = Relative Permeability
μ = Permeability

Let’s solve an example;
Find the permeability in vacuum when the relative permeability is 4 and the permeability is 40.

This implies that;

μr = Relative Permeability = 4
μ = Permeability = 40

μo = μ / μr
μo = 40 / 4
μo = 10

Therefore, the permeability in vacuum is 10.
