How to Calculate and Solve for Heat Capacity | Thermal Properties

The heat capacity is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for heat capacity, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Current Required for Production (dQ) and Temperature Change (dT).

The formula for calculating heat capacity:

C = dQ/dT

Where:

C = Heat Capacity
dQ = Current Required for Production
dT = Temperature Change

Given an example;
Find the heat capacity when the current required for production is 24 and the temperature change is 12.

This implies that;

dQ = Current Required for Production = 24
dT = Temperature Change = 12

C = dQ/dT
C = 24/12
C = 2

Therefore, the heat capacity is 2 J/Kg K.

Calculating the Current Required for Production when the Heat Capacity and the Temperature Change is Given.

dQ = C x dT

Where:

dQ = Current Required for Production
C = Heat Capacity
dT = Temperature Change

Let’s solve an example;
Find the current required for production when the heat capacity is 12 and the temperature change is 8.

This implies that;

C = Heat Capacity = 12
dT = Temperature Change = 8

dQ = C x dT
dQ = 12 x 8
dQ = 96

Therefore, the current required for production is 96 J/Kg.

Calculating the Temperature Change when the Heat Capacity and the Current Required for Production is Given.

dT = dQ / C

Where:

dT = Temperature Change
C = Heat Capacity
dQ = Current Required for Production

Let’s solve an example;
Find the temperature change when the heat capacity is 10 and the current required for production is 30.

This implies that;

C = Heat Capacity = 10
dQ = Current Required for Production = 30

dT = dQ / C
dT = 30 / 10
dT = 3

Therefore, the temperature change is 3 K.
