How to Calculate and Solve for Heat capacity at Constant Volume | Thermal Properties

Last Updated on July 24, 2022

The heat capacity at constant volume is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for heat capacity at constant volume, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Temperature Independent Constant (A) and Absolute Temperature (T).

The formula for calculating heat capacity at constant volume:

Cv = AT³

Where:

Cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume
A = Temperature Independent Constant
T = Absolute Temperature

Given an example;
Find the heat capacity at constant volume when the temperature independent constant is 12 and the absolute temperature is 18.

This implies that;

A = Temperature Independent Constant = 12
T = Absolute Temperature = 18

Cv = AT³
Cv = (12)(18)³
Cv = (12)(5832)
Cv = 69984

Therefore, the heat capacity at constant volume is 69984 J/kg K.
