The formula for calculating a-phase mass fraction:

Wα = (Q + R)/(P + Q + R)

Where:

Wα = Total α-phase Mass Fraction
P, Q = Hypo-Eutectic Phases
R = Hyper-Eutectic Phase

Given an example;
Find the total a-phase mass fraction when the hypo-eutectic mass fraction is 4, the hypo-eutectic phase is 8 and the hyper-eutectic phase is 10.

This implies that;

P = Hypo-Eutectic Phase = 4
Q = Hypo-Eutectic Phase = 8
R = Hyper-Eutectic Phase = 10

Wα = (Q + R)/(P + Q + R)
Wα = (8 + 10)/(4 + 8 + 10)
Wα = (18)/(22)
Wα = 0.818

Therefore, the Total a-Phase Mass Fraction is 0.818.
