How to Calculate and Solve for Force at the Tool Chip Interface acting Normal to the Cutting Force of the Tool | Merchant Force Circle

Last Updated on April 27, 2024

The image above represents force at the tool chip interface acting normal to the cutting force of the tool. You need three parameters to calculate force at the tool chip interface acting normal to the cutting force of the tool. These parameters are Cutting Force (Horizontal Force Component) (Fc), Cross Force (Vertical Force Component) (Ftand Rake Angle (α).

The formula for calculating force at the tool chip interface acting normal to the cutting force of the tool:

N = Fccosα – Ftsinα

Where the following applies:

N = Force at the Tool Chip Interface acting Normal to the Cutting Force of the Tool
Fc = Cutting Force (Horizontal Force Component)
Ft = Cross Force (Vertical Force Component)
α = Rake Angle

Let’s solve an example;
Find the force at the tool chip interface acting normal to the cutting force of the tool when the cutting force is 12, the cross force is 18 and the rake angle is 22°.

This implies that;

Fc = Cutting Force (Horizontal Force Component) = 12
Ft = Cross Force (Vertical Force Component) = 18
α = Rake Angle = 22°

N = Fccosα – Ftsinα
N = 12 x cos22° – 18 x sin 22°
That is, N = 12 x 0.927 – 18 x 0.374
N = 11.126 – 6.743
N = 4.38

Therefore, the force at the tool chip interface acting normal to the cutting force of the tool is 4.83 N.
