How to Calculate and Solve for Diffusion Gradient | Diffusion in Alloying

Last Updated on January 12, 2023

The image above represents diffusion gradient.

To compute for diffusion gradient, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Concentration of Metal A (CA), Concentration of Metal B (CB), Points of Metal A (xAand Points of Metal B (xB).

The formula for calculating diffusion gradient:

dC/dx = (CA – CB)/(xA – xB)

Where:

dC/dx = Diffusion Gradient
CA = Concentration of Metal A
CB = Concentrations of Metal B
xA = Points of Metal A
xB = Points of Metal B

Let’s solve an example;
Find the diffusion gradient when the concentration of metal A is 2, the concentration of metal B is 3, the points of metal A is 4 and the points of metal B is 6.

This implies that;

CA = Concentration of Metal A = 2
CB = Concentrations of Metal B = 3
xA = Points of Metal A = 4
xB = Points of Metal B = 6

dC/dx = (CA – CB)/(xA – xB)
dC/dx = (2 – 3)/(4 – 6)
dC/dx = (-1)/(-2)
dC/dx = 0.5

Therefore, the diffusion gradient is 0.5

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the diffusion gradient.
