How to Calculate and Solve for Number of Stable Nuclei | Phase Transformation

Last Updated on June 4, 2024

The image above represents number of stable nuclei. To calculate number of stable nuclei, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Constant Related to Total Number of Nuclei of the Solid Phase (k1), Activation Free Energy (ΔG*), Boltzmann’s Constant (K) and Temperature (Kelvin) (T).

The formula for calculating number of stable nuclei:

n* = k1exp(-ΔG*/KT)

Where:

n* = Number of Stable Nuclei
k1 = Constant Related to Total Number of Nuclei of the Solid Phase
K = Boltzmann’s Constant
T = Temperature
ΔG* = Activation Free Energy

Let’s solve an example;
Find the number of stable nuclei when the constant related to total number of nuclei of the solid phase is 14, the activation free energy is 11, the boltzmann’s constant is 1.380E-23 and the temperature is 10.

This implies that;

k1 = Constant Related to Total Number of Nuclei of the Solid Phase = 14
K = Boltzmann’s Constant = 1.380E-23
T = Temperature = 10
ΔG* = Activation Free Energy = 11

n* = k1exp(-ΔG*/KT)
That is, n* = (14)exp(-(11)/(1.38064852e-23)(10))
n* = (14)exp((-11)/(1.3806485199999997e-22))
n* = (14)exp(-7.967270337565713e+22)
So, n* = (14)(0)
n* = 0

Therefore, the number of stable nuclei is 0.
