How to Calculate and Solve for Linear Expansivity | Thermal Properties

Last Updated on July 24, 2022

The linear expansivity is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for linear expansivity, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Original Length (l1), Final Length (l2) and Temperature Rise in Celsius (θ).

The formula for calculating linear expansivity:

α = (l₂ – l₁)/l₁θ

Where;

α = Linear Expansivity
l₂ = Final Length
l₁ = Original Length
θ = Temperature rise (°C)

Given an example;
Find the linear expansivity when the original length is 8, the final length is 10 and the temperature rise is 14.

This implies that;

l₂ = Final Length = 8
l₁ = Original Length = 10
θ = Temperature rise (°C) = 14

α = (l₂ – l₁)/l₁θ
α = (10 – 8) / (8 x 14°C)
α = (2) / (112)
α = 0.0178

Therefore, the linear expansivity is 0.0178 1/K.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the linear expansivity.
