How to Calculate and Solve for Volume or Cubic Expansivity | Thermal Properties

Last Updated on July 25, 2022

The volume or cubic expansivity is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for volume or cubic expansivity, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Original Volume (V1), Final Volume (V2) and Temperature Rise in Celsius (θ).

The formula for calculating volume or cubic expansivity:

γ = (V₂ – V₁)/V₁θ

Where;

γ = Volume or Cubic Expansivity
V₂ = Final Volume
V₁ = Original Volume
θ = Temperature rise (°C)

Given an example;
Find the volume or cubic expansivity when the final volume is 6, the original volume is 4 and temperature rise is 10.

This implies that;

V₂ = Final Volume = 6
V₁ = Original Volume = 4
θ = Temperature rise (°C) = 10

γ = (V₂ – V₁)/V₁θ
γ = (6 – 4) / (4 x 10°C)
γ = (2) / (40)
γ = 0.05

Therefore, the volume or cubic expansivity is 0.05 1/K.
