The formula for calculating standard deviation:

Standard Deviation = √((∑|X – Mean|2) / N)

Mean = ∑X / N
N = Total number of the set of data
∑X = Sum of the Set of Data

Given an example;
Find the standard deviation when the set of data is 3.

This implies that;

N = Total number of the set of data = 1
∑X = Sum of the Set of Data = 3

Standard Deviation = √((∑|X – Mean|2) / N)
That is, Mean = ∑X / N
Mean = 3 / 1
Mean = 3

3 0 0 0

∑(|X – Mean|²) = 0
Standard Deviation = √(∑(|X – Mean|²) / N)
Then, Standard Deviation = √(0 / 1)
Standard Deviation = √(0)
Standard Deviation = 0

Therefore, the standard deviation is 0.
