To compute for stress ratio, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Maximum Stress (σmax) and Minimum Stress (σmin).
The formula for calculating stress ratio:
R = σmin/σmax
Where:
R = Stress Ratio
σmax = Maximum Stress
σmin = Minimum Stress
Given an example;
Find the stress ratio when the maximum stress is 20 and the minimum stress is 5.
This implies that;
σmax = Maximum Stress = 20
σmin = Minimum Stress = 5
R = σmin/σmax
R = 5/20
R = 0.25
Therefore, the stress ratio is 0.25.
Calculating the Maximum Stress when the Stress Ratio and the Minimum Stress is Given.
σmax = σmin / R
Where:
σmax = Maximum Stress
R = Stress Ratio
σmin = Minimum Stress
Let’s solve an example;
Find the maximum stress when the stress ratio is 10 and the minimum stress is 20.
This implies that;
R = Stress Ratio = 10
σmin = Minimum Stress = 20
σmax = σmin / R
σmax = 20 / 10
σmax = 2
Therefore, the maximum stress is 2.
Calculating the Minimum Stress when the Stress Ratio and the Maximum Stress is Given.
σmin = R (σmax)
Where:
σmin = Minimum Stress
R = Stress Ratio
σmax = Maximum Stress

Find the minimum stress when the stress ratio is 14 and the maximum stress is 2.
This implies that;
R = Stress Ratio = 14
σmax = Maximum Stress = 2
σmin = R (σmax)
σmin = 14 (2)
σmin = 28
Therefore, the minimum stress is 28.
