The formula for calculating maximum crack tip stress:

Where:

Given an example;

This implies that;

a = Length of Surface Crack = 10

σm = 2σo(a/ρt)0.5
σm = 2(4)(10/6)0.5
σm = (8)(1.66)0.5
σm = (8)(1.290)
σm = 10.32

Therefore, the maximum crack tip stress is 10.32 Pa.
