To compute for range stress, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Maximum Stress (σmax) and Minimum Stress (σmin).
The formula for calculating range stress:
σr = σmax – σmin
Where:
σr = Range of Stress
σmax = Maximum Stress
σmin = Minimum Stress
Given an example;
Find the range of stress when the maximum stress is 12 and the minimum stress is 4.
This implies that;
σmax = Maximum Stress = 12
σmin = Minimum Stress = 4
σr = σmax – σmin
σr = 12 – 4
σr = 8
Therefore, the range of stress is 8 Pa.
Calculating the Maximum Stress when the Range of Stress and the Minimum Stress is Given.
σmax = σr + σmin
Where:
σmax = Maximum Stress
σr = Range of Stress
σmin = Minimum Stress
Let’s solve an example;
Find the maximum stress when the range of stress is 12 and the minimum stress is 10.
This implies that;
σr = Range of Stress = 12
σmin = Minimum Stress = 10
σmax = σr + σmin
σmax = 12 + 10
σmax = 22
Therefore, the maximum stress is 22.
Calculating the Minimum Stress when the Range of Stress and the Maximum Stress is Given.
σmin = σmax – σr
Where:
σmin = Minimum Stress
σr = Range of Stress
σmax = Maximum Stress
Let’s solve an example;
Find the minimum stress when the range of stress is 14 and the maximum stress is 24.
This implies that;
σr = Range of Stress = 14
σmax = Maximum Stress = 24
σmin = σmax – σr
σmin = 24 – 14
σmin = 10
Therefore, the minimum stress is 10.
