To compute for design stress, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Design Safety (N’) and Critical Stress (σc).
The formula for calculating design stress:
σd = N’σc
Where:
σd = Design Stress
N’ = Design Safety
σc = Critical Stress
Given an example;
Find the design stress when the design safety is 18 and the critical stress is 9.
This implies that;
N’ = Design Safety = 18
σc = Critical Stress = 9
σd = N’σc
σd = (18)(9)
σd = 162
Therefore, the design stress is 162 Pa.
Calculating the Design Safety when the Design Stress and the Critical Stress is Given.
N’ = σd / σc
Where:
N’ = Design Safety
σd = Design Stress
σc = Critical Stress
Let’s solve an example;
Given that, the design stress is 12 and the critical stress is 2. Find the Design safety?
This implies that;
σd = Design Stress = 12
σc = Critical Stress = 2
N’ = σd / σc
N’ = 12 / 2
N’ = 6
Therefore, the design safety is 6.
Calculating the Critical Stress when the Design Stress and the Design Safety is Given.
σc = σd / N’
Where:
σc = Critical Stress
σd = Design Stress
N’ = Design Safety
Given an example;
Find the critical stress when the design stress is 36 and the design safety is 9.
This implies that;
σd = Design Stress = 36
N’ = Design Safety = 9
σc = σd / N’
σc = 36 / 9
σc = 4
Therefore, the critical stress is 4.
