How to Calculate and Solve for Critical Shear Stress | Deformation

Last Updated on December 16, 2022

The image above represents critical shear stress.

To compute for critical shear stress, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Stress (σ) and (cosφcosλ)max.

The formula for calculating critical shear stress:

τR(max) = σ(cosφcosλ)max

Where:

τR(max) = Critical Shear Stress
σ = Stress
φ, λ = Stress Axis Orientation

Given an example;
Find the critical shear stress when the stress is 14 and the (cosφcosλ)max is 2.

This implies that;

σ = Stress = 14
(cosφcosλ)max = 2

τR(max) = σ(cosφcosλ)max
τR(max) = (14)(2)
τR(max) = 28

Therefore, the critical shear stress is 28 Pa.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the critical shear stress.

To get the answer and workings of the critical shear stress using the Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia. First, you need to obtain the app.

You can get this app via any of these means:

Now, Click on Critical Shear Stress under Deformation

The screenshot below displays the page or activity to enter your values, to get the answer for the critical shear stress according to the respective parameter which is the Stress (σ) and (cosφcosλ)max.

Now, enter the values appropriately and accordingly for the parameters as required by the Stress (σ) is 14 and (cosφcosλ)max is 2.

Finally, Click on Calculate

As you can see from the screenshot above, Nickzom Calculator– The Calculator Encyclopedia solves for the critical shear stress and presents the formula, workings and steps too.
