How to Convert Engineering Stress to True Stress | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on June 8, 2024

Converting engineering stress to true stress is represented by the image below. To convert engineering stress to true stress, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Engineering Stress (σ) and Engineering Strain (ε).

The formula to convert engineering stress to true stress:

σT = σ(1 + ε)

Where:

σT = True Strain
σ = Engineering Stress
ε = Engineering Strain

Given an example;
Find the convert engineering stress to true stress when the engineering stress is 18 and the engineering strain is 2.

This implies that;

σ = Engineering Stress = 18
ε = Engineering Strain = 2

σT = σ(1 + ε)
That is, σT = 18(1 + 2)
σT = 18(3)
σT = 54

Therefore, the convert engineering stress to true stress is 54 Pa.

Calculating the Engineering Stress when the Engineering Stress, True Stress and the Engineering Strain are Given

σ = σT / (1 + ε)

Where:

σ = Engineering Stress
σT = True Strain
ε = Engineering Strain

Let’s solve an example;
Find the engineering stress when the true strain is 30 and the engineering strain is 9.

This implies that;

σT = True Strain = 30
ε = Engineering Strain = 9

σ = σT / (1 + ε)
That is, σ = 30 / (1 + 9)
σ = 30 / 10
σ = 3

Therefore, the engineering stress is 3.

Calculating the Engineering Strain when the Engineering Stress, True Stress and the Engineering Stress are Given

ε = (σT / σ) – 1

Where:

ε = Engineering Strain
σT = True Strain
σ = Engineering Stress

Let’s solve an example;
Find the engineering strain when the true strain is 16 and the engineering stress is 2.

This implies that;

σT = True Strain = 16
σ = Engineering Stress = 2

ε = (σT / σ) – 1
So, ε = (16 / 2) – 1
ε = 8 – 1
ε = 7

Therefore, the engineering strain is 7.
