How to Calculate and Solve for Convert Engineering Strain to True Strain | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on January 9, 2023

The true strain is represented by the image below.

To compute for true strain, one essential parameter is needed and this parameter is Engineering Strain (ε).

The formula for calculating true strain:

εT = In(1 + ε)

εT = True Strain
ε = Engineering Strain

Given an example;
Find the true strain when the engineering strain is 22.

This implies that;

ε = Engineering Strain = 22

εT = In(1 + ε)
εT = In(1 + 22)
εT = In(23)
εT = 3.135

Therefore, the true strain is 3.135
