How to Calculate and Solve for True Strain | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on June 8, 2024

The image above represents true strain. To calculate true strain, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Final Length at Breakage (l1and Initial Length before Breakage (l0).

The formula for calculating true strain:

εT = In(l1/l0)

Where:

εT = True Strain
l1 = Final Length at Breakage
l0 = Initial Length before Breakage

Given an example;
Find the true strain when the final length at breakage is 42 and the initial length before breakage is 8.

This implies that;

l1 = Final Length at Breakage = 42
l0 = Initial Length before Breakage = 8

εT = In(l1/l0)
So, εT = In(42/8)
εT = In(5.25)
εT = 1.658

Therefore, the true strain is 1.658.
