How to Calculate and Solve for True Strain | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on January 8, 2023

The image above represents true strain.

To compute for true strain, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Final Length at Breakage (l1and Initial Length before Breakage (l0).

The formula for calculating true strain:

εT = In(l1/l0)

Where:

εT = True Strain
l1 = Final Length at Breakage
l0 = Initial Length before Breakage

Given an example;
Find the true strain when the final length at breakage is 42 and the initial length before breakage is 8.

This implies that;

l1 = Final Length at Breakage = 42
l0 = Initial Length before Breakage = 8

εT = In(l1/l0)
εT = In(42/8)
εT = In(5.25)
εT = 1.658

Therefore, the true strain is 1.658.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the true strain.

To get the answer and workings of the true strain using the Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia. First, you need to obtain the app.

You can get this app via any of these means:

Web – https://www.nickzom.org/calculator-plus

To get access to the professional version via web, you need to register and subscribe to have utter access to all functionalities.
You can also try the demo version via https://www.nickzom.org/calculator

Once, you have obtained the calculator encyclopedia app, proceed to the Calculator Map, then click on Materials and Metallurgical under Engineering.

Now, Click on Mechanical Properties under Materials and Metallurgical

Now, Click on True Strain under Mechanical Properties

The screenshot below displays the page or activity to enter your values, to get the answer for the true strain according to the respective parameter which is the Final Length at Breakage (l1and Initial Length before Breakage (l0).

Now, enter the values appropriately and accordingly for the parameters as required by the Final Length at Breakage (l1) is 42 and Initial Length before Breakage (l0) is 8.

Finally, Click on Calculate

As you can see from the screenshot above, Nickzom Calculator– The Calculator Encyclopedia solves for the true strain and presents the formula, workings and steps too.
