How to Calculate and Solve for True Strain | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on January 8, 2023

The image above represents true strain.

To compute for true strain, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters areĀ Final Length at Breakage (l1)Ā andĀ Initial Length before Breakage (l0).

The formula for calculating true strain:

ĪµTĀ = In(l1/l0)

Where:

ĪµTĀ = True Strain
l1Ā = Final Length at Breakage
l0Ā = Initial Length before Breakage

Given an example;
Find the true strain when the final length at breakage is 42 and the initial length before breakage is 8.

This implies that;

l1 = Final Length at Breakage = 42
l0 = Initial Length before Breakage = 8

ĪµTĀ = In(l1/l0)
ĪµTĀ = In(42/8)
ĪµT = In(5.25)
ĪµT = 1.658

Therefore, theĀ true strainĀ isĀ 1.658.

Nickzom Calculator ā€“Ā The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the true strain.

To get the answer and workings of the true strain using the Nickzom Calculator ā€“ The Calculator Encyclopedia.Ā First, you need to obtain the app.

You can get this app via any of these means:

The screenshot below displays the page or activity to enter your values, to get the answer for the true strain according to the respective parameter which is the Final Length at Breakage (l1)Ā andĀ Initial Length before Breakage (l0).

Now, enter the values appropriately and accordingly for the parameters as required by the Final Length at Breakage (l1) is 42 andĀ Initial Length before Breakage (l0) is 8.

Finally, Click on Calculate

As you can see fromĀ the screenshot above,Ā Nickzom Calculatorā€“ The Calculator Encyclopedia solves for the true strain and presents the formula, workings and steps too.
