How to Calculate and Solve for Overall Irrigation Efficiency | Irrigation Water Requirement

The formula for calculating overall irrigation efficiency:

E = Ev . Ec . Ea / 104

Where:

E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency
Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%)
And then, Ec = Application Efficiency (%)
Ea = Application Efficiency (%)

Let’s solve an example;
Find the overall irrigation efficiency when the reservoir efficiency is 20, the application efficiency is 10 and the application efficiency is 5.

This implies that;

Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%) = 20
Ec = Application Efficiency (%) = 10
And then, Ea = Application Efficiency (%) = 5

E = Ev . Ec . Ea / 104
E = (20)(10)(5) / 104
So, E = 1000 / 10000
E = 0.1

Therefore, the overall irrigation efficiency is 0.1%.

Calculating the Reservoir Efficiency when the Overall Irrigation Efficiency, the Application Efficiency and the Application Efficiency are Given

Ev = E x 104 / Ec x Ea

Where;

Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%)
E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency
And then, Ec = Application Efficiency (%)
Ea = Application Efficiency (%)

Let’s solve an example;
Find the reservoir efficiency when the overall irrigation efficiency is 20, the application efficiency is 10 and the application efficiency is 2.

This implies that;

E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency = 20
Ec = Application Efficiency (%) = 10
Then, Ea = Application Efficiency (%) = 2

Ev = E x 104 / Ec x Ea
Ev = 20 x 104 / 10 x 2
So, Ev = 200000 / 20
Ev = 10000

Therefore, the reservoir efficiency is 10000.

Calculating the Application Efficiency when the Overall Irrigation Efficiency, the Reservoir Efficiency and the Application Efficiency are Given

Ec = E x 104 / Ev x Ea

Where;

Ec = Application Efficiency (%)
E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency
Then, Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%)
Ea = Application Efficiency (%)

Let’s solve an example;
Find the application efficiency when the overall irrigation efficiency is 8, the reservoir efficiency is 4 and the application efficiency is 12.

This implies that;

E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency = 8
Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%) = 4
And, Ea = Application Efficiency (%) = 12

Ec = E x 104 / Ev x Ea
Ec = 8 x 104 / 4 x 12
So, Ec = 80000 / 48
Ec = 1666.6

Therefore, the application efficiency is 1666.6%.

Calculating the Application Efficiency when the Overall Irrigation Efficiency, the Reservoir Efficiency and the Application Efficiency are Given

Ea = E x 104 / Ev x Ec

Where;

Ea = Application Efficiency (%)
E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency
And, Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%)
Ec = Application Efficiency (%)

Let’s solve an example;
Find the application efficiency when the overall irrigation efficiency is 14, the reservoir efficiency is 3 and the application efficiency is 7.

This implies that;

E = Overall Irrigation Efficiency = 14
Ev = Reservoir Efficiency (%) = 3
So, Ec = Application Efficiency (%) = 7

Ea = E x 104 / Ev x Ec
Ea = 14 x 104 / 3 x 7
Hence, Ea = 140000 / 21
Ea = 6666.6

Therefore, the application efficiency is 6666.6%.
