The formula for calculating consumptive use efficiency:

Ecu = 100 . Wcu / Wd

Where:

Ecu = Consumptive Use Efficiency
Wcu = Normal Consumptive Use of Water
Wd = Net Amount of Water depleted from Root Zone

Let’s solve an example;
Find the consumptive use efficiency when the normal consumptive use of water is 24 and the net amount of water depleted from root zone is 3.

This implies that;

Wcu = Normal Consumptive Use of Water = 24
Wd = Net Amount of Water depleted from Root Zone = 3

Ecu = 100 . Wcu / Wd
That is, Ecu = 100 . (24) / 3
Ecu = 2400 / 3
Ecu = 800

Therefore, the consumptive use efficiency is 800%.

Calculating the Normal Consumptive Use of Water when the Consumptive Use Efficiency and the Net Amount of Water Depleted from Root Zone are Given

Wcu = Ecu x Wd / 100

That is where;

Wcu = Normal Consumptive Use of Water
Ecu = Consumptive Use Efficiency
Wd = Net Amount of Water depleted from Root Zone

Let’s solve an example;
Find the normal consumptive use of water when the consumptive use efficiency is 20 and net amount of water depleted from root zone is 4.

This implies that;

Ecu = Consumptive Use Efficiency = 20
Wd = Net Amount of Water depleted from Root Zone = 4

Wcu = Ecu x Wd / 100
Then, Wcu = 20 x 4 / 100
Wcu = 80 / 100
Wcu = 0.8

Therefore, the normal consumptive use of water is 0.8%.

Calculating the Net Amount of Water Depleted from Root Zone when the Consumptive Use Efficiency and the Normal Consumptive Use of Water are Given

Wd = 100 . Wcu / Ecu

That is where;

Wd = Net Amount of Water depleted from Root Zone
Ecu = Consumptive Use Efficiency
Wcu = Normal Consumptive Use of Water

Let’s solve an example;
Find the net amount of water depleted from root zone when the consumptive use efficiency is 35 and the normal consumptive use of water is 5.

This implies that;

Ecu = Consumptive Use Efficiency = 35
And that: Wcu = Normal Consumptive Use of Water = 5

Wd = 100 . Wcu / Ecu
So, Wd = 100 . 5 / 35
Wd = 500 / 35
Wd = 14.28

Therefore, the net amount of water depleted from root zone is 14.28%.
