How to Calculate and Solve for Average Depth of Water Applied | Furrow Irrigation | Irrigation Water Requirement

Last Updated on April 20, 2024

The image above represents average depth of water applied. Four essential parameters are needed to calculate the average depth of water applied: stream size (q), duration of irrigation (t), furrow space (w), and furrow length (l).

The formula for calculating average depth of water applied:

d = 3600q . t / w . l

Where:

d = Average Depth of Water Applied
q = Stream Size
t = Duration of Irrigation
w = Furrow Space
l = Furrow Length

Let’s solve an example;
Find the average depth of water applied when the stream size is 8, duration of irrigation is 12, furrow space is 10 and furrow length is 4.

This implies that;

q = Stream Size = 8
t = Duration of Irrigation = 12
w = Furrow Space = 10
l = Furrow Length = 4

d = 3600q . t / w . l
That is, d = 3600(18) . (12) / (10) . (4)
d = 777600 / 40
d = 19440

Therefore, the average depth of water applied is 19440.

Calculating the Stream Size when the Average Depth of Water Applied, the Duration of Irrigation, Furrow Space and the Furrow Length are Given

q = d x w.l / 3600 x t

Where;

q = Stream Size
d = Average Depth of Water Applied
t = Duration of Irrigation
w = Furrow Space
l = Furrow Length

Let’s solve an example;
Find the stream size when the average depth of water applied is 20, the duration of irrigation is 3, the furrow space is 8 and the furrow length is 4.

This implies that;

d = Average Depth of Water Applied = 20
t = Duration of Irrigation = 3
w = Furrow Space = 8
l = Furrow Length = 4

q = d x w.l / 3600 x t
So, q = 20 x 8.4 / 3600 x 3
q = 640 / 10800
q = 0.059

Therefore, the stream size is 0.059.

Calculating the Duration of Irrigation when the Average Depth of Water Applied, the Stream Size, the Furrow Space and the Furrow Length are Given

t = d x w.l / 3600 x q

Where;

t = Duration of Irrigation
d = Average Depth of Water Applied
q = Stream Size
w = Furrow Space
l = Furrow Length

Let’s solve an example;
Find the duration of irigation when the average depth of water applied is 24, the stream size is 2, the furrow space is 6 and the furrow length is 4.

This implies that;

d = Average Depth of Water Applied = 24
q = Stream Size = 2
w = Furrow Space = 6
l = Furrow Length = 4

t = d x w.l / 3600 x q
That is, t = 24 x 6.4 / 3600 x 2
t = 576 / 7200
t = 0.08

Therefore, the duration of irrigation is 0.08.

Calculating the Furrow Space when the Average Depth of Water Applied, the Stream Size, the Duration of Irrigation and the Furrow Length are Given

w = 3600q.t / d x l

Where;

w = Furrow Space
d = Average Depth of Water Applied
q = Stream Size
t = Duration of Irrigation
l = Furrow Length

Let’s solve an example;
Find the furrow space when the average depth of water applied is 14, the stream size is 10, the duration of irrigation is 8 and the furrow length is 2.

This implies that;

d = Average Depth of Water Applied = 14
q = Stream Size = 10
t = Duration of Irrigation = 8
l = Furrow Length = 2

w = 3600q.t / d x l
Then, w = 3600 (10)(8) / 14 x 2
w = 288000 / 28
w = 10285.7

Therefore, the furrow space is 10285.7.

Calculating the Furrow Length when the Average Depth of Water Applied, the Stream Size, the Duration of Irrigation and the Furrow Space are Given

l = 3600q.t / d x w

Where;

l = Furrow Length
d = Average Depth of Water Applied
q = Stream Size
t = Duration of Irrigation
w = Furrow Space

Let’s solve an example;
Find the furrow length when the average depth of water applied is 18, the stream size is 4, the duration of irrigation is 6 and the furrow space is 10.

This implies that;

d = Average Depth of Water Applied = 18
q = Stream Size = 4
t = Duration of Irrigation = 6
w = Furrow Space = 10

l = 3600q.t / d x w
So, l = 3600 (4)(6) / 18 x 10
l = 86400 / 180
l = 480

Therefore, the furrow length is 480.
