How to Calculate and Solve for Water Storage Efficiency | Methods of Application of Water

Last Updated on April 20, 2024

The image above represents water storage efficiency. To calculate water storage efficiency, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant (wsand Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation (wn).

The formula for calculating water storage efficiency:

Es = 100 . ws / wn

Where:

Es = Water Storage Efficiency
ws = Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant
wn = Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation

Let’s solve an example;
Find the water storage efficiency when the water stored in the root zone of the plant is 34 and the water needed in the root zone prior to irrigation is 12.

This implies that;

ws = Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant = 34
wn = Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation = 12

Es = 100 . ws / wn
Then, Es = 100 (34) / 12
Es = 3400 / 12
Es = 283.3

Therefore, the water storage efficiency is 283.3%.

Calculating the Water Stored in the Root Zone of the Plant when the Water Storage Efficiency and the Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation are Given

ws = Es x wn / 100

Where;

ws = Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant
Es = Water Storage Efficiency
wn = Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation

Let’s solve an example;
Find the water stored in the root zone of the plant when the water storage efficiency is 30 and the water needed in the root zone prior to irrigation is 6.

This implies that;

Es = Water Storage Efficiency = 30
wn = Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation = 6

ws = Es x wn / 100
That is, ws = 30 x 6 / 100
ws = 180 / 100
ws = 1.8

Therefore, the water stored in the root zone of the plant is 1.8%.

Calculating the Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation when the Water Storage Efficiency and the Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant are Given

wn = 100 x wn / Es

Where;

wn = Water needed in the Root Zone prior to Irrigation
Es = Water Storage Efficiency
ws = Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant

Let’s solve an example;
Find the water needed in the root zone prior to irrigation when the water storage efficiency is 40 and the water stored in the root zone of the plant is 10.

This implies that;

Es = Water Storage Efficiency = 40
ws = Water stored in the Root Zone of the Plant = 10

wn = 100 x wn / Es
So, wn = 100 x 10 / 40
wn = 1000 / 40
wn = 25

Therefore, the water needed in the root zone prior to irrigation is 25%.
