# How to Calculate and Solve for Shear Modulus | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on December 30, 2022

The image above represents shear modulus.

To compute for shear modulus, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Shear Stress (τ) and Shear Strain (γ).

The formula for calculating shear modulus:

G = τ/γ

Where:

G = Shear Modulus
τ = Shear Stress
γ = Shear Strain

Given an example;
Find the shear modulus when the shear stress is 15 and the shear strain is 3.

This implies that;

τ = Shear Stress = 15
γ = Shear Strain = 3

G = τ/γ
G = 15/3
G = 5

Therefore, the shear modulus is 5 Pa.

Calculating the Shear Stress when the Shear Modulus and the Shear Strain is Given.

τ = G x γ

Where:

τ = Shear Stress
G = Shear Modulus
γ = Shear Strain

Let’s solve an example;
Find the shear stress when the shear modulus is 20 and the shear strain is 4.

This implies that;

G = Shear Modulus = 20
γ = Shear Strain = 4

τ = G x γ
τ = 20 x 4
τ = 80

Therefore, the shear stress is 80 Pa.

Calculating the Shear Strain when the Shear Modulus and the Shear Stress is Given.

γ = τ / G

Where:

γ = Shear Strain
G = Shear Modulus
τ = Shear Stress

Let’s solve an example;
Find the shear strain when the shear modulus is 14 and the shear stress is 56.

This implies that;

G = Shear Modulus = 14
τ = Shear Stress = 56

γ = τ / G
γ = 56 / 14
γ = 4

Therefore, the shear strain is 4 Pa.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the shear modulus.

To get the answer and workings of the shear modulus using the Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia. First, you need to obtain the app.

You can get this app via any of these means:

To get access to the professional version via web, you need to register and subscribe to have utter access to all functionalities.
You can also try the demo version via https://www.nickzom.org/calculator

Apple (Paid) – https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nickzom-calculator/id1331162702?mt=8
Once, you have obtained the calculator encyclopedia app, proceed to the Calculator Map, then click on Materials and Metallurgical under Engineering.

Now, Click on Mechanical Properties under Materials and Metallurgical

Now, Click on Shear Modulus under Mechanical Properties

The screenshot below displays the page or activity to enter your values, to get the answer for the shear modulus according to the respective parameter which is the Shear Stress (τ) and Shear Strain (γ).

Now, enter the values appropriately and accordingly for the parameters as required by the Shear Stress (τ) is 15 and Shear Strain (γ) is 3.

Finally, Click on Calculate

As you can see from the screenshot above, Nickzom Calculator– The Calculator Encyclopedia solves for the shear modulus and presents the formula, workings and steps too.
