How to Calculate and Solve for Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow | Transport Phenomena

Last Updated on October 2, 2021

The image above represents kinetic force of turbulent flow.

To compute for kinetic force of turbulent flow, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Characteristic Area of Tube (A), Characteristic Kinetic Energy (K) and Friction Factor (f).

The formula for calculating kinetic force of turbulent flow:

Fk = AKf

Where:

Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow
A = Characteristic Area of Tube
K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy
f = Friction Factor

Let’s solve an example;
Find the kinetic force of turbulent flow when the characteristic area of tube is 4, the characteristic kinetic energy is 2 and the friction factor is 6.

This implies that;

A = Characteristic Area of Tube = 4
K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy = 2
f = Friction Factor = 6

Fk = AKf
Fk = (4)(2)(6)
Fk = 48

Therefore, the kinetic force of turbulent flow is 48 N.

Calculating the Characteristic Area of Tube when the Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow, the Characteristic Kinetic Energy and the Friction Factor is Given.

A = Fk / Kf

Where:

A = Characteristic Area of Tube
Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow
K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy
f = Friction Factor

Let’s solve an example;
Given that the kinetic force of turbulent flow is 40, the characteristic kinetic energy is 2 and the friction factor is 4. Find the characteristic area of tube?

This implies that;

Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow = 40
K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy = 2
f = Friction Factor = 4

A = Fk / Kf
A = 40 / (2)(4)
A = 40 / 8
A = 5

Therefore, the characteristic area of tube is 5.

Calculating the Characteristic Kinetic Energy when the Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow, the Characteristic Area of Tube and the Friction Factor is Given.

K = Fk / Af

Where:

K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy
Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow
A = Characteristic Area of Tube
f = Friction Factor

Let’s solve an example;
Find the characteristic kinetic energy when the kinetic force of turbulent flow is 24, the characteristic area of tube is 4 and the friction factor is 3.

This implies that;

Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow = 24
A = Characteristic Area of Tube = 4
f = Friction Factor = 3

K = Fk / Af
K = 24 / (4)(3)
K = 24 / 12
K = 2

Therefore, the characteristic kinetic energy is 2.

Calculating the Friction Factor when the Kinetic Factor of Turbulent Flow, the Characteristic Area of Tube and the Characteristic Kinetic Energy is Given.

f = Fk / AK

Where:

f = Friction Factor
Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow
A = Characteristic Area of Tube
K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy

Let’s solve an example;
Given that the kinetic force of turbulent flow is 35, the characteristic area of tube is 5 and the characteristic kinetic energy is 2. Find the Friction Factor?

This implies that;

Fk = Kinetic Force of Turbulent Flow = 35
A = Characteristic Area of Tube = 5
K = Characteristic Kinetic Energy = 2

f = Fk / AK
f = 35 / (5)(2)
f = 35 / 10
f = 3.5

Therefore, the friction factor is 3.5
