How to Calculate and Solve for Calculate the Number of Components in System | Gibbs Phase Rule

Last Updated on December 11, 2022

The image of number of components in system is represented below.

To compute for number of components in system, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Number of Phases Present (P), Number of Degree of Freedom (F) and Number of Non-Compositional Variables (N).

The formula for calculating number of components in system:

C = (P + F) – N

Where:

C = Number of Components in System
P = Number of Phases Present
F = Number of Degree of Freedom
N = Number of Non-Compositional Variables

Let’s solve an example;
Find the number of components in system when the number of phases present is 10, the number of degree of freedom is 6 and the number of non-compositional variables is 8.

This implies that;

P = Number of Phases Present = 10
F = Number of Degree of Freedom = 6
N = Number of Non-Compositional Variables = 8

C = (P + F) – N
C = (10 + 6) – 8
C = (16) – 8
C = 8

Therefore, the number of components in system is 8.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the number of components in system.
