How to Calculate and Solve for Calculate the Number of Degree of Freedom | Gibbs Phase Rule

Last Updated on December 11, 2022

The image of number of degree of freedom is represented below.

To compute for number of degree of freedom, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Number of Phases Present (P), Number of Components in System (C) and Number of Non-Compositional Variables (N).

The formula for calculating number of degree of freedom:

F = (C + N) – P

Where:

F = Number of Degree of Freedom
P = Number of Phases Present
C = Number of Components in System
N = Number of Non-Compositional Variables

Let’s solve an example;
Given that the number of phases present is 5, the number of components in system is 15 and the number of non-compositional variables is 2.

This implies that;

P = Number of Phases Present = 5
C = Number of Components in System = 15
N = Number of Non-Compositional Variables = 2

F = (C + N) – P
F = (15 + 2) – 5
F = 17 – 5
F = 12

Therefore, the number of degree of freedom is 12.
