How to Calculate and Solve for Calculate the Number of Phases Present | Gibbs Phase Rule

Last Updated on December 11, 2022

The image of number of phases present is represented below.

To compute for number of phases present, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Number of Degree of Freedom (F), Number of Components in System (C) and Number of Non-Compositional Variables (N).

The formula for calculating number of phases present:

P = (C + N) – F

Where:

P = Number of Phases Present
F = Number of Degree of Freedom
C = Number of Components in System
N = Number of Non-Compositional Variables

Given an example;
Find the number of phases present when the number of degree of freedom is 8, the number of components in system is 2 and the number of  non-compositional variables is 5.

This implies that;

F = Number of Degree of Freedom = 8
C = Number of Components in System = 2
N = Number of Non-Compositional Variables = 5

P = (C + N) – F
P = (4 + 5) – 8
P = (9) – 8
P = 1

Therefore, the number of phases present is 1.
