How to Calculate and Solve for Horse Power | Irrigation Water Requirement

The formula for calculating horse power:

HP = P . L . A . n / 4500

Where:

HP = Horse Power
P = Indicated Mean Effective Pressure
L = Piston Stroke
A = Piston Area
n = Total Number of Power Strokes per Minute for all Cylinders

Let’s solve an example;
Find the horse power when the indicated mean effective pressure is 10, the piston stroke is 8, the piston area is 11 and the total number of power strokes per minute for all cylinders is 16.

This implies that;

P = Indicated Mean Effective Pressure = 10
L = Piston Stroke = 8
A = Piston Area = 11
n = Total Number of Power Strokes per Minute for all Cylinders = 16

HP = P . L . A . n / 4500
That is, HP = (10) . (8) . (11) . (16) / 4500
HP = 14080 / 4500
HP = 3.128

Therefore, the horse power is 3.128.

Calculating the Indicated Mean Effective Pressure when the Horse Power, the Piston Stroke, the Piston Area and the Total Number of Power Strokes per Minute for all Cylinders are Given

P = HP x 4500 / L . A . n

P = 9000 / 144
P = 62.5

Therefore, the indicated mean effective pressure is 62.5.

Therefore, the piston stroke is 140.6.

A = HP x 4500 / P . L . n

Where;

A = Piston Area
HP = Horse Power

Find the piston area when the horse power is 4, the indicated mean effective pressure is 5, the piston stroke is 10 and the total number of power strokes per minute for all cylinders is 2.

This implies that;

HP = Horse Power =4
P = Indicated Mean Effective Pressure = 5
L = Piston Stroke = 10
n = Total Number of Power Strokes per Minute for all Cylinders = 2

A = HP x 4500 / P . L . n
A = 4 x 4500 / 5 . 10 . 2
So, A = 18000 / 100
A = 180

Therefore, the piston area is 180.

Calculating the the Total Number of Power Strokes per Minute for all Cylinders when the Horse Power, the Indicated Mean Effective Pressure, the Piston Stroke and Piston Area are Given

n = HP x 4500 / P . L . A

Where;

n = Total Number of Power Strokes per Minute for all Cylinders
HP = Horse Power
P = Indicated Mean Effective Pressure
L = Piston Stroke
A = Piston Area

Let’s solve an example;
Find the total number of power strokes per minute for all cylinders when the horse power is 5, the indicated mean effective pressure is 22, the piston stroke is 4 and the piston area is 6.

This implies that;

HP = Horse Power = 5
P = Indicated Mean Effective Pressure = 22
L = Piston Stroke = 4
A = Piston Area = 6

n = HP x 4500 / P . L . A
So, n = 5 x 4500 / 22 . 4 . 6
n = 22500 / 528
n = 42.61

Therefore, the total number of power strokes per minute for all cylinders is 42.61.
