How to Calculate and Solve for Displacement Volume | Irrigation Water Requirement

The formula for calculating displacement volume:

VD = ALn

Where:

VD = Displacement Volume
A = Area of Piston
L = Length of Piston
n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute

Let’s solve an example;
Find the displacement volume when the area of piston is 12, the length of piston is 6 and the no of piston stroke per minute is 10.

This implies that;

A = Area of Piston = 12
L = Length of Piston = 6
n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute = 10

VD = ALn
That is, VD = (12)(6)(10)
VD = 720

Therefore, the displacement volume is 720.

Calculating for the Area of Piston when the Displacement Volume, the Length of Piston and the No of Piston Stroke per Minute are Given

A = VD/ Ln

Where;

A = Area of Piston
VD = Displacement Volume
L = Length of Piston
n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute

Let’s solve an example;
Find the area of piston when the displacement volume is 42, the length of piston is 3 and the no of piston per minute is 2.

This implies that;

VD = Displacement Volume = 42
L = Length of Piston = 3
n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute = 2

A = VD/ Ln
Then, A = 42/ 3 x 2
A = 42/ 6
A = 7

Therefore, the area of piston is 7.

Calculating the Length of the Piston when the Displacement Volume, the Area of the Piston, and the No of Piston Strokes per Minute are Given

L = VD/ An

Where;

L = Length of Piston
VD = Displacement Volume
A = Area of Piston
n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute

Let’s solve an example;
Find the Length of Piston when the displacement volume is 85, the area of piston is 5 and the no of piston stroke per minute is 3.

This implies that;

VD = Displacement Volume = 85
A = Area of Piston = 5
n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute = 3

L = VD/ An
So, L = 85/ 5 x 3
L = 85/ 15
L = 5.6

Therefore, the length of piston is 5.6.

Calculating for the No of Piston Stroke per Minute when the Displacement Volume, the Length of Piston and the Area of Piston are Given

n = VD/ AL

Where;

n = No of Piston Stroke per Minute
VD = Displacement Volume
A = Area of Piston
L = Length of Piston

Let’s solve an example;
Find the no of piston stroke per minute when the displacement volume is 28, the area of piston is 2 and the length of piston is 2.

This implies that;

VD = Displacement Volume = 28
A = Area of Piston = 2
L = Length of Piston = 2

n = VD/ AL
So, n = 28/ 2 x 2
n = 28/ 4
n = 7

Therefore, the no of piston strokes per minute is 7.
