How to Calculate and Solve for Non Steady State Diffusion | Diffusion in Alloying

Last Updated on February 28, 2023

The image above represents non steady state diffusion.

To compute for non steady state diffusion, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Distance of Diffusion (x), Diffusion Coefficient (D) and Time for Diffusion (t).

The formula for calculating non steady state diffusion:

Jn = /Dt

Where:

Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion
x = Distance of Diffusion
D = Diffusion Coefficient
t = Time for Diffusion

Given an example;
Find the non steady state diffusion when the distance of diffusion is 8, the diffusion coefficient is 10 and the time for diffusion is 12.

This implies that;

x = Distance of Diffusion = 8
D = Diffusion Coefficient = 10
t = Time for Diffusion = 12

Jn = /Dt
Jn = (8)²/(10)(12)
Jn = (64)/(120)
Jn = 0.53

Therefore, the non steady state diffusion is 0.53 mol m-2 s-1.

Calculating the Distance of Diffusion when the Non Steady State Diffusion, the Diffusion Coefficient and the Time for Diffusion is Given.

x = √Jn x Dt

Where:

x = Distance of Diffusion
Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion
D = Diffusion Coefficient
t = Time for Diffusion

Let’s solve an example;
Find the distance of diffusion when the non steady state diffusion is 10, the diffusion coefficient is 5 and the time for diffusion is 6.

This implies that;

Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion = 10
D = Diffusion Coefficient = 5
t = Time for Diffusion = 6

x = √Jn x Dt
x = √10 x (5)(6)
x = √10 x 30
x = √40
x = 6.32

Therefore, the distance of diffusion is 6.32.

Calculating the Diffusion Coefficient when the Non Steady State Diffusion, the Distance of Diffusion and the Time for Diffusion is Given.

D = x2 / Jn x t

Where:

D = Diffusion Coefficient
Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion
x = Distance of Diffusion
t = Time for Diffusion

Let’s solve an example;
Given that, the non steady state diffusion is 6, the distance of diffusion is 8 and the time for diffusion is 2.

This implies that;

Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion = 6
x = Distance of Diffusion = 8
t = Time for Diffusion = 2

D = x2 / Jn x t
D = 82 / 6 x 2
D = 64 / 12
D = 5.33

Therefore, the diffusion coefficient is 5.33.

Calculating the Time for Diffusion when the Non Steady State Diffusion, the Distance of Diffusion and the Diffusion Coefficient is Given.

t = x2 / Jn x D

Where:

t = Time for Diffusion
Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion
x = Distance of Diffusion
D = Diffusion Coefficient

Given an example;
Find the time for diffusion when the non steady state diffusion is 2, the distance of diffusion is 4 and the diffusion coefficient is 3.

This implies that;

Jn = Non Steady State Diffusion = 2
x = Distance of Diffusion = 4
D = Diffusion Coefficient = 3

t = x2 / Jn x D
t = 42 / 2 x 3
t = 16 / 6
t = 2.67

Therefore, the time for diffusion is 2.67s.
