How to Calculate and Solve for Brinell Hardness Number | Mechanical Properties

Last Updated on January 10, 2023

The image above represents brinell hardness number.

To compute for brinell hardness number, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Load Applied (P), Diameter of Indenter (D) and Part of Diameter of Indenter in the Material (d).

The formula for calculating brinell hardness number:

HB = 2P/πD(D – √(D² – d²))

Where:

HB = Brinell Hardness Number
P = Load Applied
D = Diameter of Indenter
d = Part of Diameter of Indenter in Material

Given an example;
Find the brinell hardness number when the load applied is 4, the diameter of indenter is 11 and the part of diameter of indenter in material is 8.

This implies that;

P = Load Applied = 4
D = Diameter of Indenter = 11
d = Part of Diameter of Indenter in Material = 8

HB = 2P/πD(D – √(D² – d²))
HB = 2(4)/π(11)(11 – √((11)² – (8)²))
HB = (8)/(34.55)(11 – √((121) – (64)))
HB = (8)/(34.55)(11 – √(57))
HB = (8)/(34.55)(11 – (7.54))
HB = (8)/(34.5)(3.450)
HB = (8)/(119.2)
HB = 0.067

Therefore, the brinell hardness number is 0.067.
