How to Calculate and Solve for Liquid Mass Fraction (Composition) | Binary Phase | Phase Transformation

Last Updated on December 10, 2022

The image of liquid mass fraction(composition) is represented below.

To compute for liquid mass fraction, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Alloy Composition (Co), α Present in the Liquid Composition (Cαand Liquid Composition (CL).

The formula for calculating liquid mass fraction:

WL = (Cα – Co)/(Cα – CL)

Where:

WL = Liquid Mass Fraction
Co = Alloy Composition
Cα = α Present in Liquid Composition
CL = Liquid Composition

Let’s solve an example;
Find the liquid mass fraction when the alloy composition is 15, the a present in liquid composition is 9 and the liquid composition is 3.

This implies that;

Co = Alloy Composition = 15
Cα = α Present in Liquid Composition = 9
CL = Liquid Composition = 3

WL = (Cα – Co)/(Cα – CL)
WL = (9 – 15)/(9 – 3)
WL = -6/6
WL = -1

Therefore, the liquid mass fraction (composition) is -1.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the liquid mass fraction (composition).
