How to Calculate and Solve for Constant of Lorentz Number | Thermal Properties

Last Updated on July 25, 2022

The constant of lorentz number is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for constant of lorentz number, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Thermal Conductivity (K), Electrical Conductivity (σ) and Absolute Temperature (T).

The formula for calculating the constant of lorentz number:

L = K/σT

Where:

L = Constant of Lorentz Number
K = Thermal Conductivity
σ = Electrical Conductivity
T = Absolute Temperature

Given an example;
Find the constant of lorentz number when the thermal conductivity is 44, the electrical conductivity is 11 and the absolute temperature is 2.

This implies that;

K = Thermal Conductivity = 44
σ = Electrical Conductivity = 11
T = Absolute Temperature = 2

L = K/σT
L = 44/(11)(2)
L = 44/(22)
L = 2

Therefore, the constant of lorentz number is 2.

Calculating the Thermal Conductivity when the Constant of Lorentz Number, the Electrical Conductivity and the Absolute Temperature is Given.

K = L (σT)

Where:

K = Thermal Conductivity
L = Constant of Lorentz Number
σ = Electrical Conductivity
T = Absolute Temperature

Let’s solve an example;
Find the thermal conductivity when the constant of lorentz number is 2, the electrical conductivity is 5 and the absolute temperature is 4.

This implies that;

L = Constant of Lorentz Number = 2
σ = Electrical Conductivity = 5
T = Absolute Temperature = 4

K = L (σT)
K = 2 (5)(4)
K = 40

Therefore, the thermal conductivity is 40.

Calculating the Electrical Conductivity when the Constant of Lorentz Number, the Thermal Conductivity and the Absolute Temperature is Given.

σ = K / L.T

Where:

σ = Electrical Conductivity
L = Constant of Lorentz Number
K = Thermal Conductivity
T = Absolute Temperature

Let’s solve an example;
Find the electrical conductivity when the constant of lorentz number is 4, the thermal conductivity is 32 and the absolute temperature is 2.

This implies that;

L = Constant of Lorentz Number = 4
K = Thermal Conductivity = 32
T = Absolute Temperature = 2

σ = K / L.T
σ = 32 / (4)(2)
σ = 32 / 8
σ = 4

Therefore, the electrical conductivity is 4.

Calculating the Absolute Temperature when the Constant of Lorentz Number, the Thermal Conductivity and the Electrical Conductivity is Given.

T = K / L.σ

Where:

T = Absolute Temperature
L = Constant of Lorentz Number
K = Thermal Conductivity
σ = Electrical Conductivity

Let’s solve an example;
Find the absolute temperature when the constant of lorentz number is 5, the thermal conductivity is 60 and the electrical conductivity is 2.

This implies that;

L = Constant of Lorentz Number = 5
K = Thermal Conductivity = 60
σ = Electrical Conductivity = 2

T = K / L.σ
T = 60 / (5)(2)
T = 60 / 10
T = 6

Therefore, the absolute temperature is 6.
