How to Calculate and Solve for Magnetic Field Strength | Magnetic Properties

Last Updated on July 21, 2022

The magnetic field strength is illustrated by the image below.

To compute for magnetic field strength, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Number of Coils Spread together Closely (N), Magnitude of Current (I) and Length of Coil (L).

The formula for calculating magnetic field strength:

H = NI/L

Where:

H = Magnetic Field Strength
N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely
I = Magnitude of Current
L = Length of Coil

Given an example;
Find the magnetic field strength when the number of coils spread together closely is 4, the magntitude of current is 8 and the length of coil is 10.

This implies that;

N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely = 4
I = Magnitude of Current = 8
L = Length of Coil = 10

H = NI/L
H = (4)(8)/10
H = 32/10
H = 3.2

Therefore, the magnetic field strength is 3.2 A/m.

Calculating the Number of Coils Spread together Closely when the Magnetic Field Strength, the Magntitude of Current and the Length of Coil is Given.

N = HL / I

Where:

N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely
H = Magnetic Field Strength
I = Magnitude of Current
L = Length of Coil

Let’s solve an example;
Find the number of coils spread together closely when the magnetic field strength is 10, the magntitude of current is 5 and the length of coil is 2.

This implies that;

H = Magnetic Field Strength = 10
I = Magnitude of Current = 5
L = Length of Coil = 2

N = HL / I
N = (10)(2) / 5
N = 20 / 5
N = 4

Therefore, the number of coils spread together closely is 4.

Calculating the Magnitude of Current when the Magnetic Field Strength, the Number of Coils Spread together Closely and the Length of Coil is Given.

I = HL / N

Where:

I = Magnitude of Current
H = Magnetic Field Strength
N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely
L = Length of Coil

Let’s solve an example;
Find the magnitude of current when the magnetic field strength is 18, the number of coils spread together closely is 12 and the length of coil is 14.

This implies that;

H = Magnetic Field Strength = 18
N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely = 12
L = Length of Coil = 14

I = HL / N
I = (18)(14) / 12
I = 252 / 12
I = 21

Therefore, the magnitude of current is 21.

Calculating the Length of Coil when the Magnetic Field Strength, the Number of Coils Spread together Closely and the Magnitude of Current is Given.

L = NI / H

Where:

L = Length of Coil
H = Magnetic Field Strength
N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely
I = Magnitude of Current

Let’s solve an example;
Find the length of coil when the magnetic field strength is 5, the number of coild spread together closely is 12 and the magnitude of current is 10.

This implies that;

H = Magnetic Field Strength = 5
N = Number of Coils Spread together Closely = 12
I = Magnitude of Current = 10

L = NI / H
L = (12)(10) / 5
L = 120 / 5
L = 24

Therefore, the length of coil is 24.
