The formula for calculating time constant:

u = a1 / ao

Where:

u = Time Constant

ao = Co-efficient

Let’s solve an example;
Find the time constant when the co-efficient is 32 and the co-efficient is 14.

This implies that;

a1 = Co-efficient = 32
ao = Co-efficient = 14

u = a1 / ao
That is, u = 32 / 14
u = 2.28

Therefore, the time constant is 2.28.

Calculating for the Co-efficient when the Time Constant and the Co-efficient are Given

a1 = u x ao

Where;

a1 = Co-efficient
u = Time Constant
ao = Co-efficient

Let’s solve an example;
Find the Co-efficient when the time constant is 20 and the co-efficient is 8.

This implies that;

u = Time Constant = 20
ao = Co-efficient = 8

a1 = u x ao
So, a1 = 20 x 8
a1 = 160

Therefore, the co-efficient is 160.

Calculating for the Co-efficient when the Time Constant and the Co-efficient are Given

ao = a1 / u

Where;

ao = Co-efficient
u = Time Constant
a1 = Co-efficient

Let’s solve an example;
Find the co-efficient when the time constant is 15, and the co-efficient is 45.

This implies that;

u = Time Constant = 15
a1 = Co-efficient = 45

ao = a1 / u
So, ao = 45 / 15
ao = 3

Therefore, the co-efficient is 3.
