The formula for calculating steady flow in an unconfined aquifer:

qt = K(h1² – h2² / 2L)

Where:

qt = Steady Flow in an Unconfined Aquifer
K = Hydraulic Conductivity
h1 = Head at the Origin
h2 = Head at L
L = Flow Length

Let’s solve an example;
Find the steady flow in an unconfined aquifer where the hydraulic conductivity is 14, the head at the origin is 8, head at L is 3 and the flow length is 5.

This implies that;

K = Hydraulic Conductivity = 14
h1 = Head at the Origin = 8
h2 = Head at L = 3
L = Flow Length = 5

qt = K(h1² – h2² / 2L)
So, qt = 14(8² – 3² / 2(5))
qt = 14(64 – 9 / 10)
qt = 14(55 / 10)
Then, qt = 14(5.5)
qt = 77

Therefore, the steady flow in an unconfined aquifer is 77.
