How to Calculate and Solve for Normal Dumping Ratio | Dynamic Characteristics of Instruments

Last Updated on April 23, 2024

The image above represents the normal dumping ratio. Two essential parameters are needed to calculate the normal dumping ratio: actual dumping (da) and critical dumping (dc).

The formula for calculating normal dumping ratio:

ε = da / dc

Where:

ε = Normal Dumping Ratio
da = Actual Dumping
dc = Critical Dumping

Let’s solve an example;
Find the normal dumping ratio when the actual dumping is 12 and the critical dumping is 6.

This implies that;

da = Actual Dumping = 12
dc = Critical Dumping = 6

ε = da / dc
So, ε = 12 / 6
ε = 2

Therefore, the normal dumping ratio is 2.

Calculating for Actual Dumping when the Normal Dumping Ratio and the Critical Dumping are Given

da = ε x dc

Where;

da = Actual Dumping
ε = Normal Dumping Ratio
dc = Critical Dumping

Let’s solve an example;
Find the actual dumping when the normal dumping ratio is 12 and the critical dumping is 9.

This implies that;

ε = Normal Dumping Ratio = 12
dc = Critical Dumping = 9

da = ε x dc
Then, da = 12 x 9
da = 108

Therefore, the actual dumping is 108.

Calculating for Critical Dumping when the Normal Dumping Ratio and the Actual Dumping are Given

dc = da / ε

Where;

dc = Critical Dumping
ε = Normal Dumping Ratio
da = Actual Dumping

Let’s solve an example;
Find the critical dumping when the normal dumping ratio is 12 and the actual dumping is 56.

This implies that;

ε = Normal Dumping Ratio = 12
da = Actual Dumping = 56

dc = da / ε
So, dc = 56 / 12
dc = 4.67

Therefore, the critical dumping is 4.67.
