How to Calculate and Solve for Extension | Hooke’s Law

Last Updated on June 7, 2024

The image above represents extension. Two essential parameters, the Elastic Constant (k) and Force (F), are needed to calculate extension with Hooke’s law.

The formula for calculating extension with Hooke’s law:

e = F/k

Where:

e = Extension
F = Force
k = Elastic Constant

Let’s solve an example;
Given that the force is 18 and the elastic constant is 2. Find the extension?

This implies that;

F = Force = 18
k = Elastic Constant = 2

e = F/k
That is, e = 18 / 2
e = 9

Therefore, the extension is 9 m.
