How to Calculate and Solve for Rate of Absorption | Mineral Processing

Last Updated on December 9, 2021

The image above represents rate of absorption.

To compute for rate of absorption, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Proportionality Constant (Ka), Gas Pressure (P) and Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed (θ).

The formula for calculating rate of absorption:

R = KaP(1 – θ)

Where:

R = Rate of Absorption
Ka = Proportionality Constant
P = Gas Pressure
θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed

Let’s solve an example;
Find the rate of absorption when the proportionality constant is 2, the gas pressure is 4 and the fraction of surface covered by adsorbed is 8.

This implies that;

Ka = Proportionality Constant = 2
P = Gas Pressure = 4
θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed = 8

R = KaP(1 – θ)
R = 2(4)(1 – 8)
R = 2(4)(-7)
R = -56

Therefore, the rate of absorption is -56.

Calculating the Proportionality Constant when the Rate of Absorption, the Gas Pressure and the Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed is Given.

Ka = R / P(1 – θ)

Where:

Ka = Proportionality Constant
R = Rate of Absorption
P = Gas Pressure
θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed

Let’s solve an example;
Find the proportionality constant when the rate of absorption is 22, the gas pressure is 12 and the fraction of surface covered by adsorbed is 4.

This implies that;

R = Rate of Absorption = 22
P = Gas Pressure = 12
θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed = 4

Ka = R / P(1 – θ)
Ka = 22 / 12(1 – 4)
Ka = 22 / 12(-3)
Ka = 22 / -36
Ka = 0.61

Therefore, the proportionality constant is 0.61.

Calculating the Gas Pressure when the Rate of Absorption, the Proportionality Constant and the Fraction Covered by Adsorbed is Given.

P = R / Ka(1 – θ)

Where:

P = Gas Pressure
R = Rate of Absorption
Ka = Proportionality Constant
θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed

Let’s solve an example;
Find the gas pressure when the rate of absorption is 14, the proportionality constant is 8 and the fraction of surface covered by adsorbed is 5.

This implies that;

R = Rate of Absorption = 14
Ka = Proportionality Constant = 8
θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed = 5

P = R / Ka(1 – θ)
P = 14 / 8(1 – 5)
P = 14 / 8(-4)
P = 14 / -32
P = -0.437

Therefore, the gas pressure is -0.437.

Calculating the Fraction Covered by Adsorbed when the Rate of Absorption, the Proportionality Constant and the Gas Pressure is Given.

θ = R / KaP – 1

Where:

θ = Fraction of Surface Covered by Adsorbed
R = Rate of Absorption
Ka = Proportionality Constant
P = Gas Pressure

Let’s solve an example;
Find the fraction covered by adsorbed when the rate of absorption is 32, the proportionality constant is 12 and the gas pressure is 2.

This implies that;

R = Rate of Absorption = 32
Ka = Proportionality Constant = 12
P = Gas Pressure = 2

θ = R / KaP – 1
θ = 32 / (12)(2) – 1
θ = 32 / 24 – 1
θ = 1.33 – 1
θ = 0.33

Therefore, the fraction of surface covered by adsorbate is 0.33.
