How to Calculate and Solve for Mean Free Path | Debye Theory of Melting Solid | Energy Transport

Last Updated on September 23, 2021

The image above represents mean free path.

To compute for mean free path, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Melting Point of Solid (Tm), Crystal Lattice Dimension (d), γ and Absolute Temperature (T).

The formula for calculating the mean free path:

λph = 20Tmd / γ²T

Where:

λph = Mean Free Path | Debye Theory of Melting Solid
Tm = Melting Point of Solid
d = Crystal Lattice Dimension
T = Absolute Temperature

Let’s solve an example;
Find the mean free path when the melting point of solid is 12, the crystal lattice dimension is 24, the γ is 2 and the absolute temperature is 10.

This implies that;

Tm = Melting Point of Solid = 12
d = Crystal Lattice Dimension = 24
γ = 2
T = Absolute Temperature = 10

λph = 20Tmd / γ²T
λph = 20(12)(24) / (2)²(10)
λph = 5760 / (4)(10)
λph = 5760 / 40
λph = 144

Therefore, the mean free path is 144.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the mean free path.
