To compute for casting yield, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Net Mass of Casting (Mc) and Mass of Metal Charge (Mmc).
The formula for calculating casting yield:
y = Mc / Mmc x 100%
Where:
y = Casting Yield
Mc = Net Mass of Casting
Mmc = Mass of Metal Charge
Let’s solve an example;
Find the casting yield when the net mass of casting is 21 and the mass of metal charge is 7.
This implies that;
Mc = Net Mass of Casting = 21
Mmc = Mass of Metal Charge = 7
y = Mc / Mmc x 100%
y = 21/ 7 x 100%
y = 3 x 100%
y = 300%
Therefore, the casting yield is 300%.
Calculating the Net Mass of Casting when the Casting Yield and the Mass of Metal Casting is Given.
Mc = y x Mmc / 100%
Where:
Mc = Net Mass of Casting
y = Casting Yield
Mmc = Mass of Metal Charge
Let’s solve an example;
Find the net mass of casting when the casting yield is 10 and the mass of metal charge is 2.
This implies that;
y = Casting Yield = 10
Mmc = Mass of Metal Charge = 2
Mc = y x Mmc / 100%
Mc = 10 x 2 / 100%
Mc = 20 / 100%
Mc = 0.2
Therefore, the net mass of casting is 0.2%.

Mmc = Mc x 100% / y
Where:
Mmc = Mass of Metal Charge
y = Casting Yield
Mc = Net Mass of Casting
Let’s solve an example;
Find the mass of metal charge when the casting yield is 12 and the net mass of casting is 4.
This implies that;
y = Casting Yield = 12
Mc = Net Mass of Casting = 4
Mmc = Mc x 100% / y
Mmc = 4 x 100% / 12
Mmc = 400% / 12
Mmc = 33.3
Therefore, the mass of metal charge is 33.3%
