How to Calculate and Solve for Infiltration Capacity | Huggin’s Model | Methods of Application of Water

Last Updated on April 18, 2024

The image above represents infiltration capacity. To calculate infiltration capacity, six essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Final constant infiltration capacity (Fc), Co-efficient (A), Co-efficient (p), Storage potential (s), Total volume of water that infiltrates (f) and Total porosity of soil lying over the impeding stratum (Tp).

The formula for calculating infiltration capacity:

F = Fc + A(s – f)p / Tp

Where:

F = Infiltration Capacity
Fc = Final Constant Infiltration Capacity
A = Co-efficient
s = Co-efficient
f = Storage Potential
p = Total Volume of Water that Infiltrates
Tp = Total Porosity of Soil Lying over the Impeding Stratum

Let’s solve an example;
Find the infiltration capacity when the final constant infiltration capacity is 24, the co-efficient is 12, the co-efficient is 9, the storage potential is 7, the total volume of water that infiltrates is 4 and the total porosity of soil lying over the impeding stratum is 6.

This implies that;

Fc = Final Constant Infiltration Capacity = 24
A = Co-efficient = 12
s = Co-efficient = 9
f = Storage Potential = 7
p = Total Volume of Water that Infiltrates = 4
Tp = Total Porosity of Soil Lying over the Impeding Stratum = 6

F = Fc + A(s – f)p / Tp
F = 24 + 12(9 – 7)4 / 6
That is, F = 24 + 12(2)4 / 6
F = 24 + 12(16) / 6
F = 24 + 192 / 6
So, F = 24 + 32
F = 56

Therefore, the infiltration capacity is 56.
