How to Calculate and Solve for Rate of Flow | Hydrology II

The image above represents rate of flow. To calculate rate of flow, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Co-efficient of Permeability (k), Hydraulic gradient (i) and Cross-Sectional Area of Soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of Flow (A).

The formula for calculating rate of flow:

Q = kiA

Where:

Q = Rate of Flow
k = Coefficient of Permeability
i = Hydraulic Gradient
A = Cross-Sectional Area of Soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the rate of flow when the co-efficient of permeability is 14, hydraulic gradient is 22 and the cross-sectional area of soil mass perpendicular to the direction of flow is 10.

This implies that;

k = Coefficient of Permeability = 14
i = Hydraulic Gradient = 22
A = Cross-Sectional Area of Soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of Flow = 10

That is, Q = kiA
Q = (14)(22)(10)
Q = 3080

Therefore, the rate of flow is 3080.

Calculating for the Co-efficient of Permeability when the Rate of Flow, the Hydraulic Gradient and the Cross-Sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow are Given

k = Q / iA

Where;

k = Co-efficient of Permeability
Q = Rate of Flow
i = Hydraulic Gradient
A = Cross-Sectional Area of Soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the co-efficient of permeability when the rate of flow is 40, the hydraulic gradient is 15 and the cross-sectional area of soil mass perpendicular to direction of flow is 2.

This implies that;

Q = Rate of flow = 40
i = Hydraulic Gradient = 15
A = Cross-Sectional Area of Soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of Flow = 2

k = Q / iA
Then, k = 40 / 15 x 2
k = 40 / 30
k = 1.33

Therefore, the co-efficient of permeability is 1.33.

How to Calculate for Hydraulic Gradient when the Rate of Flow, the Co-efficient of Permeability and the Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of Flow are Given

i = Q / kA

Where;

i = Hydraulic Gradient
Q = Rate of Flow
k = Co-efficient of Permeability
A = Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow

Let’s Solve an example;
Find the hydraulic Gradient when the Rate of Flow is 35, the co-efficient of permeability is 5 and the cross-sectional area of soil Mass perpendicular to Direction of flow is 3.

This implies that;

Q = Rate of Flow = 35
k = Co-efficient of Permeability = 5
A = Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow = 3

i = Q / kA
Then, i = 35 / 5 x 3
i = 35 / 15
i = 2.33

Therefore, the hydraulic gradient is 2.33

How to Calculate for Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow when the Rate of Flow, the Co-efficient of Permeability and the Hydraulic Gradient are Given

A = Q / ki

Where;

A = Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow
Q = Rate of Flow
k = Co-efficient of Permeability
i = Hydraulic Gradient

Let’s Solve an example;
Find the Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow when the Rate of flow is 20, the Co-efficient of Permeability is 10 and the Hydraulic Gradient is 1.

This implies that;

Q = Rate of Flow = 20
k = Co-efficient of Permeability = 10
i = Hydraulic Gradient = 1

A = Q / ki
So, A = 20 / 10 x 1
A = 20 / 10
A = 2

Therefore, the Cross-sectional Area of Soil Mass Perpendicular to Direction of Flow is 2.
