How to Calculate and Solve for Discharge | Logarithmic Method | Irrigation Water Requirement

Last Updated on April 20, 2024

The image above represents discharge. To calculate discharge, four essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form) (c), Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form) (n), Gauge Height (G) and Gauge Height corresponding to Zero Discharge (Go).

The formula for calculating discharge:

Q = c(G – Go)n

Where:

Q = Discharge
c = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form)
n = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form)
G = Gauge Height
Go = Gauge Height corresponding to Zero Discharge

Let’s solve an example;
Find the discharge when the constant for any station (logarithmic form) is 10, the constant for any station (logarithmic form) is 15, the gauge height is 22 and the gauge height corresponding to zero discharge is 14.

This implies that;

c = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form) = 10
n = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form) = 15
G = Gauge Height = 22
Go = Gauge Height corresponding to Zero Discharge = 14

Q = c(G – Go)n
Q = 10(22 – 14)15
That is, Q = 10(8)15
Q = 10(35184372088832)
Q = 351843720888320

Therefore, the discharge is 351843720888320.

Calculating the Constant for any Station (logarithmic form) when the Discharge, the Constant for any Station (logarithmic form), the Gauge Height and the Guage Height corresponding to Zero Discharge are Given

c = Q / (G – Go)n

Where;

c = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form)

Q = Discharge
n = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form)
G = Gauge Height
Go = Gauge Height corresponding to Zero Discharge

Let’s solve an example;
Find the constant for any station (logarithmic form) when the discharge is 10, the constant for any station (logarithmic form) is 4, the guage height is 12 and the gauge height corresponding to zero discharge is 8.

This implies that;

Q = Discharge = 10
n = Constant for any Station (Logarithmic Form) = 4
G = Gauge Height = 12
Go = Gauge Height corresponding to Zero Discharge = 8

c = Q / (G – Go)n
c = 10 / (12 – 8)4
So, c = 10 / (4)4
c = 10 / 256
c = 0.039

Therefore, the constant for any station (logarithmic form) is 0.039.
