The image above represents the total head. Two essential parameters are needed to calculate the total head: Pressure head (hp) and elevation head (z).
The formula for calculating total head:
h = hp + z
Where:
h = Total Head
hp = Pressure Head
z = Elevation Head
Let’s solve an example;
Find the total head when the pressure head is 21 and the elevation head is 32.
This implies that;
hp = Pressure Head = 21
z = Elevation Head = 32
h = hp + z
So, h = 21 + 32
h = 53
Therefore, the total head is 53.
Calculating the Pressure Head when the Total Head and the Elevation Head are Given
hp = h – z
Where;
hp = Pressure Head
h = Total Head
z = Elevation Head
Let’s solve an example;
Given that the total head is 34 and the elevation head is 20. Find the Pressure head?
This implies that;
h = Total Head = 34
z = Elevation Head = 20
That is, hp = h – z
hp = 34 – 20
hp = 14
Therefore, the pressure head is 14.

Calculating the Elevation Head when the Total Head and the Pressure head are Given
z = h – hp
Where;
z = Elevation Head
h = Total Head
hp = Pressure Head
Let’s solve an example;
With a total head of 50 and a pressure head of 35. Find the Elevation Head?
This implies that;
h = Total Head = 50
hp = Pressure Head = 35
z = h – hp
Then, z =50 – 35
z = 15
Therefore, the elevation head is 15.
