How to Calculate and Solve for Intensity of Non-Absorbed Radiation | Optical Properties

Last Updated on July 17, 2022

The intensity of non-absorbed radiation is iilustrated by the image below.

To compute for the intensity of non-absorbed radiation, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Intensity of Non-Reflected Incident Radiation (Io), Absorption Coefficient (β) and Distance (x).

The formula for calculating intensity of non-absorbed radiation:

IT = Ioe-βx

Where:

IT = Intensity of Non-Absorbed Radiation
Io = Intensity of Non-Reflected Incident Radiation
β = Absorption Coefficient
x = Distance

Given an example;
Find the intensity of non-absorbed radiation when the intensity of non-reflected incident radiation is 12, the absorption coefficient is 8 and the distance is 10.

This implies that;

Io = Intensity of Non-Reflected Incident Radiation = 12
β = Absorption Coefficient = 8
x = Distance = 10

IT = Ioe-βx
IT = 12e-(8)(10)
IT = 12e-80
IT = 12(1.804e-35)
IT = 2.165e-34

Therefore, the intensity of non-absorbed radiation is 2.165e-34.
