How to Calculate and Solve for Friction Factor | Turbulent Flow | Transport Phenomena

Last Updated on October 2, 2021

The image above represents friction factor.

To compute for friction factor, one essential parameter is needed and this parameter is Reynold’s Number at Laminar Flow (ReL).

The formula for calculating friction factor:

f = 0.455 / (logReL)2.58

Where:

f = Friction Factor | Turbulent Flow
ReL = Reynold’s Number at Laminar Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the friction factor when the reynold’s number at laminar flow is 12.

This implies that;

ReL = Reynold’s Number at Laminar Flow = 12

f = 0.455 / (logReL)2.58
f = 0.455 / (log(12))2.58
f = 0.455 / (1.079)2.58
f = 0.455 / 1.217
f = 0.37

Therefore, the friction factor is 0.37.

Nickzom Calculator – The Calculator Encyclopedia is capable of calculating the friction factor.
