How to Calculate and Solve for Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume | Energy Transport

Last Updated on September 23, 2021

The image above represents thermal conductivity.

To compute for thermal conductivity, three essential parameters are needed and these parameters are Heat Capacity at Constant Volume (cv), Velocity of Fluid Flow (v’) and Wavelength of Flow (λ).

The formula for calculating thermal conductivity:

k = cvv’λ / 3

Where:

k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume
cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume
v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow
λ = Wavelength of Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the thermal conductivity when the heat capacity at constant volume is 21, the velocity of fluid flow is 14 and the wavelength of flow is 10.

This implies that;

cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume = 21
v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow = 14
λ = Wavelength of Flow = 10

k = cvv’λ / 3
k = (21)(14)(10) / 3
k = 2940 / 3
k = 980

Therefore, the thermal conductivity is 980 W/mK.

Calculating the Heat Capacity at Constant Volume when the Thermal Conductivity, the Velocity of Fluid Flow and the Wavelength of Flow is Given.

cv = k3 / v’λ

Where:

cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume
k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume
v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow
λ = Wavelength of Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the heat at capacity at constant volume when the thermal conductivity is 12, the velocity of fluid flow is 2 and the wavelength of flow is 4.

This implies that;

k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume = 12
v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow = 2
λ = Wavelength of Flow = 4

cv = k3 / v’λ
cv = (12)3 / (2)(4)
cv = 36 / 8
cv = 4.5

Therefore, the heat capacity at constant volume is 4.5.

Calculating the Velocity of Fluid Flow when the Thermal Conductivity, the Heat Capacity at Constant Volume and the Wavelength of Flow is Given.

v’ = k3 / cvλ

Where:

v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow
k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume
cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume
λ = Wavelength of Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the velocity of fluid flow when the thermal conductivity is 15, the heat capacity at constant volume is 8 and the wavelength of flow is 3.

This implies that;

k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume = 15
cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume = 8
λ = Wavelength of Flow = 3

v’ = k3 / cvλ
v’ = (15)3 / (8)(3)
v’ = 45 / 24
v’ = 1.875

Therefore, the velocity of fluid flow is 1.875.

Calculating the Wavelength of Flow when the Thermal Conductivity, the Heat Capacity at Constant Volume and the Velocity of Fluid Flow is Given.

λ = k3 / cvv’

Where:

λ = Wavelength of Flow
k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume
cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume
v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow

Let’s solve an example;
Find the wavelength of flow when the thermal conductivity is 10, the heat capacity at constant volume is 5 and the velocity of fluid flow is 2.

This implies that;

k = Thermal Conductivity | Heat Capacity per Unit Volume = 10
cv = Heat Capacity at Constant Volume = 5
v’ = Velocity of Fluid Flow = 2

λ = k3 / cvv’
λ = (10)3 / (5)(2)
λ = 30 / 10
λ = 3

Therefore, the wavelength of flow is 3.
