How to Calculate and Solve for Storage Difference | Irrigation Water Requirement

If you want to calculate the storage difference, six essential parameters are needed, and these parameters are Precipitation (P), Irrigation (I), Runoff from the Field (R), Downward Drainage out of the Root Zone (D), Evaporation from the Soil (E) and Transpiration by Crop Canopy (T).

The formula for calculating storage difference:

SD = (P + I) – (R + D + E + T)

Where:

SD = Storage Difference
P = Precipitation
I = Irrigation
R = Runoff from the Field
D = Downward Drainage out of the Root Zone
E = Evaporation from the Soil
T = Transpiration by Crop Canopy

Let’s solve an example;
Find the storage difference when the precipitation is 21, the irrigation is 5, the runoff from the field is 10, the downward drainage out of the root zone is 14, the evapotranspiration from the soil is 8 and the transpiration by crop canopy is 20.

This implies that;

P = Precipitation = 21
I = Irrigation = 5
R = Runoff from the Field = 10
D = Downward Drainage out of the Root Zone = 14
E = Evaporation from the Soil = 8
T = Transpiration by Crop Canopy = 20

SD = (P + I) – (R + D + E + T)
SD = (21 + 5) – (10 + 14 + 8 + 24)
That is, SD = 26 – 56
SD = -30

Therefore, the storage difference is -30.
