The image above represents period. To calculate period in motion, two essential parameters are needed and these parameters are mass (m) and elastic constant (k).

The formula for calculating period:

T = 2π(√(m / k))

Where;

T = Period
m = Mass
k = Elastic Constant

Let’s solve an example;
Find the period when the mass is 32 and the elastic constant is 16.

This implies that;

m = Mass = 32
k = Elastic Constant = 16

T = 2π(√(m / k))
T = 2π x (√(32 / 16))
So, T = 2π x (√(2))
T = 2π x 1.41
T = 6.28 x 1.41
Then, T = 8.88

Therefore, the period is 8.88 s.

Calculating the Mass when the Period and the Elastic Constant are Given

m = (T / 2π)2 x k

Where;

m = Mass
T = Period
k = Elastic Constant

Let’s solve an example;
Find the mass when the period is 22, and the elastic constant is 8.

This implies that;

T = Period = 22
k = Elastic Constant = 8

m = (T / )2 x k
m = (22 / 6.28)2 x 8
So, m = (3.50)2 x 8
m = 12.25 x 8
m = 98

Therefore, the mass is 98.

Calculating the Elastic Constant when the Period and the Mass are Given

k = m / (T / )2

Where;

k = Elastic Constant
T = Period
m = Mass

Let’s solve an example;
Given that the period is 12 and the mass is 7, find the elastic constant.

This implies that;

T = Period = 12
m = Mass = 7

k = m / (T / )2
k = 7 / (12 / 6.28)2
Then, k = 7 / (1.91)2
k = 7 / 3.648
k = 1.918

Therefore, the elastic constant is 1.918.
